Who are we?

Rabbi Yossi & Baila Brackman - Directors

Rabbi Yossi Brackman was born and raised in London, and studied at the Lubavitch House Schools. As a teenager, he was involved in community programming and Jewish summer camps in London, Seattle, and New York, and spent a memorable Pesach with Jewish children in Denepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Yossi received his rabbinical ordination in Chicago, and was instrumental in the foundation of the Lubavitch Mesivta for Rabbinical students on Chicago’s North Side.

Baila Brackman, a Chicago native, studied at the Ohel Chana Seminary in Melbourne, where she organized programs for adults and children. She has taught and performed charitable work in Chicago and around the world in countries such as Germany and Latvia.

After their marriage in 1999, Yossi and Baila traveled to Shanghai to direct communal activities for the local Jewish community. After one year, the Brackmans moved to Chicago to teach at a local day school, and in February 2001 the Chabad Jewish Center opened in Hyde Park, operating at first out of a small apartment on Kimbark Ave. In late 2010, Chabad moved out of the Brackman home and into its current location on Woodlawn, the Rohr Chabad Center for Jewish Life and Learning.

Yossi and Baila have five wonderful children: Mussie, Esther, Shmulie, Zelda, and Mendel.
