Building Campaign
Update: 12/22/2010
With thanks to G-d and with the help of our many generous donors, we have closed on the new property.
We have a $350,000 mortgage and would like to renovate the building. Your help is most appreciated.

Expanding Jewish Life at the University of Chicago and in Hyde Park
History:
The Chabad Jewish Center at the University of Chicago was established in February 2002. With the Chabad’s trademark passion and excitement for Judaism, Rabbi Yossi and Baila Brackman began hosting Shabbat dinners and giving classes on a variety of Jewish topics, working out of their two bedroom apartment. With time, the programs grew and more and more students and community members participated in the many events offered by Chabad.
Current:
In May 2003 the Chabad Jewish Center bought a building on the corner of Kimbark Ave and 57th St with the purpose of housing the rabbi and his family and serve as a Chabad House. At a typical Shabbat dinner 30-50 students fill the room each week and while the 1st Passover Seder is still held off site due to its size, the 2nd Seder of 60 students is held at the Chabad House. On a weekly basis over 30 students come to study at Chabad and many more are making use of the library of Jewish books and other resources.
While the 1,000 sq ft of usable space enabled Chabad to expand and earn its place in the community, the time has come to take the next step.
The Future:

The Chabad Jewish Center has entered into a contract to purchase a 4,500 square foot building at 5700 South Woodlawn Ave at the corner of 57th St. This will revolutionize Jewish life at the U of C and allow for simultaneous programs, administrative offices, a student lounge and dedicated spaces for Shabbat dinners and prayer services.
In addition, the property is large enough to allow for expansion and further building of a Mikvah and other facilities. The mission of Chabad is to create a warm and non-judgmental environment where students can feel at home and learn about the beauty of Judaism, its traditions and their heritage.
Your partnership will make this dream a reality.
|
Immediate Goal:
· To enable visitors to drop in at any time.
· To allow for multiple simultaneous classes.
· Create a warm and inviting beginners Shabbat prayer service.
· Allow for more students to attend Yossi and Baila's legendary Shabbat dinners and other events.
Future Goal:
· Mikvah
· As the University of Chicago targets more Jewish students, Chabad will be in the best position possible to cater for this increase.
· As the neighborhood expands, we anticipate more Jewish families demanding our services.
|

We have been fortunate to receive a $500,000 matching grant to jump start the campaign.
You can help us turn this dream into a reality with your generous tax deductible contribution. All contributions of $5,000 and higher can be paid over time.
